With more than 50 closed shops and buildings, a feeling of emptiness and powerlessness pervades the historical centre of Split during the off-season. Voids 2021 reacts to the longstanding problem of growing mass tourism in Croatia and the seemingly powerless situation in Split. In February and March, the project has been opening spaces used for touristic purposes in the summer and reappropriating them for arts and activism. Artist residencies and an open call involving the local community and civil society organizations make visible the potential of the creative community that constitutes an integral part of the city’s genetic code. Bringing together artists from former Yugoslav countries and the local community, Voids creates spaces for mutual understanding and translocal collaborative projects.
