Prof. Dr. Daniel Birnbaum

Born in Stockholm in 1963, Daniel Birnbaum studied philosophy and literature at the University of Stockholm, FU Berlin and Columbia University New York.

1989–1997 Art critic of the Swedisch daily paper Dagens Nyheter; publisher and free-lance curator
1996-1998 Lecturer in art theory at the University College of Art, Craft and Design in Stockholm
1998 PhD at the faculty of philosophy, University Stockholm
until 2000 Director of the Swedish "International Artists Studio Program" (IASPIS)
since 2000 Headmaster of the State University of Visual Arts in Frankfurt am Main; Director of the Neue Portikus (Frankfurt a.M.)
2002 Co-Curator of the Italian Pavillons of the Venice Biennale
2005 Co-Curator of the 1st Moskau Biennale of cCntemporary Art; curator of "Uncertain States of America" (in cooperation with Hans-Ulrich Obrist)
2009 Director of the 53. Venice Biennale (in collaboration with Co-Director Jochen Volz) 
since 2010 Direktor of Moderna Museet Stockholm
